Jack Malebranche on The Satandard – Oct. 31st!

THE STANDARD

Attention Canadian readers! Upcoming TV appearance.

About two years ago Jack appeared on OMNI.10′s “The Standard” in Canada to represent the Church of Satan. Most “talk” shows that address current issues are either tea parties or carnival dunk tanks. On The Standard, which loosely covers issues “through the lens of faith,” the producers actually give their guests an opportunity to get ideas across without shouting them down. So when “The Standard” approached him a second time, he was happy to work with them again.

He recently taped an episode slated to air on Halloween. The show had a new host and he was a bit more aggressive, but I think the end result should be well worth watching. The producers read Androphilia, and over half of the 20 minute show ended up being about the book.

Unfortunately, it only airs on OMNI.10 in Canada.

If you’re in Canada, set your digital video recording devices.

The Standard is seen Monday to Friday at 9:00 p.m. in Vancouver and Victoria on OMNI.10. The program also airs on OMNI.11 in Winnipeg, weeknights at 9:00 p.m. CT, and throughout Ontario on OMNI.1, Sundays at 1:00 p.m. ET. In addition, a specially edited version is seen nationally on The Biography Channel.

Jack Malebranche interviewed on “Key 64″

From Jack Malebranche:
Key64 - Jack Malebranche InterviewNick Pell, who wrote the most in-depth review of Androphilia published to date for Just Out’s May 18 Issue (see page 15), also recorded an interview with me on video around the same time.

That interview is now available on the front page of his e-zine, Key 64. I’m really pleased with the way it came out. I love their opening animation – sorta like early Nova via Dr. Who or something. You’ll find an eclectic and interesting selection of other articles on the site as well, if occult studies and far out stuff are your cups of tea.

Stephen Kasner Interviewed on Invisible Organges

Stephen Kasner: WORKS 1993-2006 - Paper Bound

Stephen Kasner was the subject of a short interview at Invisible Orages: The Metel MP3 Blog. Go to the site to download the Martin Grech song “Guiltless”.

The art of Stephen Kasner is one of the best things that’s ever happened to me. Although I’m now familiar with his style, it still d/haunts me. It’s a “take a deep breath and leap into the unknown” proposition, which I prize but find so rarely. I’m honored to have spoken with him; his interview and artwork are up today in my ongoing metal artists feature this week at Stylus.

Kasner did the cover for Martin Grech’s Unholy (Island, 2005). It’s the inverse of a Rothko take on a cross – not religious, but dirty, gauzy, fading. The image fits the the album, which pairs Grech’s Jeff Buckley/Thom Yorke/male Bjork vocals with ambient alt-rock and occasional metal a la Tool or NIN. Like an M. Night Shyamalan movie, the result doesn’t always work, but it’s atmospheric as hell. “Guiltless,” one of the album’s singles, is a lush, slow burn.

Below are some outtakes from my interview with Kasner.

Do you think there’s misanthropy in your work?

I think in terms of the darker side of nature, the darker side of man, buried thoughts, nightmares, regret, things that we as humans often try to bury – things that psychiatrists make a lot of money on.

In your album artwork, you often focus on a central element instead of playing with the edges of the frame.

In my paintings in general, I usually have a central focus or various groups of focus, and there’s also areas that are not focused. They’re unrefined, and I don’t mean that in a negative way. It’s almost like pinhole photography, where you have a focus, coupled with areas of distorted image.

I’ve always been fascinated by early photography. Some of the most powerful images I’ve ever seen have been in early photography or portraiture, where things are as refined as they can be, but the tools and techniques they employed at the time had a natural distortion to it. There’s something about that to me that’s so melancholy and so beautiful. Not to read too much into the edges of my paintings, but I think it’s part homage to these photographic images.

Are you one of those people that prefer vinyl to CD’s?

I most certainly do. But CD’s and MP3′s become very handy in the studio. If I’m working in the studio, I’m working for many, many hours. My work is pretty dirty. It’s pretty hefty work. I don’t paint in a very controlled environment. A lot of times I’m throwing huge buckets of paint and washes on my work. It’s very tactile and messy. So it’d become inconvenient to always be flipping vinyl. But I do have a vinyl collection that I appreciate very much when I’m at home.

Being A Man – Androphilia reviewed in Portland’s “Just Out”

ANDROPHILIA: A MANIFESTO by Jack MalebrancheBeing a Man
Author deconstructs “the stigma of effeminacy”

by Nick Pell

It might be hyperbole to say Jack Malebranche has written the manifesto queer men have been waiting for, but manifestos invite overstatement and require little justification. Rather than argue a position, they claim ideological turf.

The author of Androphilia: Rejecting the Gay Identity, Reclaiming Masculinity explicitly states, “I didn’t write this book for gays.” Rather, his target audience is “men who love men but who are sick to death of the gay community.” Gay culture, Malebranche claims, has less to do with sexual preference than it does subculture, slang and stereotypes. Far from being a harmless diversion, the gay subculture imposes a false separation between heterosexual and homosexual men. This sexual apartheid not only negatively affects homosexuals, but also heterosexuals who acquire homophobic ideas in reaction to what Malebranche considers a small, vocal minority of “queenie” gay men grabbing all the attention.
