INTRODUCTION
Scapegoat Publishing is a book publisher dedicated to producing fine art, fiction and non-fictional works of quality for a discriminating audience. Our books focus on the dark, sometimes sinister, often-controversial endeavors of some of the intrepid explorers of our cultural underworld.

Our first title, American Gothic is a collection of the experimental photography of Carlos Batts. Growing up in Baltimore among the influences of John Waters and the television show Homicide, and taking to photographing cadavers as well as naked people, Batts has since transplanted to Hollywood. Germany’s Edition Reuss released a massive first book of his work, titled Wild Skin. The same company released a second book bearing a title that reflected the perverse geography and culture that he now captured, Crazy Sexy Hollywood.

Carlos has worked with a number of musicians doing cover art and photography including: Danzig, Snoop Dog, Radiation 4, City High, Crystal Method, Ozomatli, Ginuwine, The Distillers, Pig Destroyer, Ink & Dagger, Dwarves, Dog Fashion Disco, Nikka Costa, Nebula and Mastodon.

In American Gothic Carlos is uncovering work that had only been hinted at in the first two books: a fractured and perverse eye that the camera unaided cannot always reveal. He uses collage and effects to produce inhuman and often unearthly portraits; often what the final images reveal is far too human for comfortable contemplation.

Scapegoat Publishing will be focusing on releasing quality books, with every release having a limited edition version. We are currently working with the painter Stephen Kasner, author Jim Goad, and others on future releases.
